A parent in the United Kingdom sought to stop public schools from showing the film to school children on the grounds that it contained untruths. The court determined that it had no complaint about Gore's central thesis that climate change was happening and was being driven by emissions from humans, but the judge said nine statements in the film were not supported by mainstream scientific consensus. Following this decision, schools must not show the film unless accompanied by guidance giving the other side of the argument.

One claim in the film was that ice on Mount Kilimanjaro was receding as a direct result of recent global warming. In fact, local factors are more likely the main, or only, reason for that change. Other claims may in time prove to be true, but were made in the film before scientists were sufficiently confident to support them. To be a commercial success, the film had to be, in part, entertainment, and shows emotional images that could be out of place in a pure documentary.
