Yes James K Polk wanted Texas to be annex, but people in the north is saying that they did not want another slave state. He was going against a guy who did not want to annex Texas. He won the election
James K. Polk was called the dark horse because he was a surprise nominee- a compromise after none of the front-running candidate for the Democratic nomination could get the required majority at the convention. (He was not a total unknown since he had been Speaker of the US House and governor of Tennessee and was supported by ex-president Andrew Jackson.)
Polk was born in NC but when he was 10, he moved with his family some 500 miles into Tennessee, southwest of Nashville.
he kept all his promises, including not running for a second term.
Polk said we had to go to war because U.S. forces had been attacked on the Rio Grande. Some said we provoked Mexico into war.
Polk was a Southerner and an expansionist. He believed in the right to run the country from sea to sea. I am not so sure he wanted to expand slavery. I think he may have had some household slaves, but was not a big slave-owner.
Jefferson, Madison, Polk and Garfield could read classical Greek and Latin. John Adams and John Quincy Adams both knew Latin and probably some Greek.
