If possible, go inside a building and keep doors and windows closed. You are relatively safe from lightning in a vehicle, but buildings are safer. If trapped outside, take shelter in a low-lying area, lying flat or crouching. Stay away from trees or tall structures.
Do not lift metal objects such as umbrellas or Golf clubs, or stand near those who might do so.
If you need to use a phone, cell phones are safer than landlines because the landline may conduct an electrical discharge.
So long as its a thunderstorm and not a tornado, you can really continue on with your normal life, just try to avoid open water, and tall objects if you're outside. In the case that lightning is striking near you surrounding area, get in your car but don't turn it on, don't stand under trees, stay away from telephone lines, and if you don't have a car nearby, get in a crouch position and try to have the least amount of contact with the ground as possible.
All you have to do is unplug the telephone and unnecessary appliances, avoid running water, turn off the air conditioner, draw the blinds in case a window breaks, listen to the news for updated weather reports, pull off of the highway during a storm, avoid using electronics including cell phones or two-way radios, make sure all windows and doors are shut....you stuff like that
Call for help on a cell phone while indoors.
Crouch with just the balls of your feet in contact with the ground.
Go inside a closed building
dont stand under a tree
