Just be there for him, and show him he has a good friend to count on, and he'll be fine.

Loss of friendship can be very painful. People can change in the blink of an eye, especially during middle school and high school. You can try to remember all the memories you and your friend shared, try to just remember that you can always make new friends that you can be with forever. It might take some time but eventually you will make new friends and start over.
Either you or your friend talk to the principal and ask if he/she can do some community service for the school so it doesn't go on their permanent record.
