There are any number of superstitions, omens and meanings of flowers, many of them are specific to a single culture. Here are a few:
- when giving flower to someone, it is considered lucky if you give an odd number.
- flowers carried by brides were a symbol of good fortune and fuitfulness
- it was once considered unlucky to take flowers that bloomed out of season into the house as it predicted a death in the house.
- bunches of red and white flowers were considered unlucky by British nurses and frowned upon in hospitals.
- if a patient in hospital leaves flowers they were given while ill, in the hospital when they leave it is thought to be an omen they will soon return.
- dead flowers found in the road should under no circumstances be picked put.
- detecting the smell of flowers where there are none is said to predict a death.
