The Florida race of the mountain lion, called "Florida Panther", was threatened by inbreeding, and loss of habitat, which in turn caused many conflicts, most of all collisions with cars. The cats were down to around 30 in the wild, when researchers released 8 Texas cougars, all female, which is a race very closely allied to the Florida race, to help with the inbreeding problem. There are now over 85 panthers there now, and measures are being taken to decrease the numbers of auto fatalities to them by building crossways beneath highways for them to cross safely.
