When you are submitting your manuscript to a publisher, do it professionally. Here are some true stories from editors and publishers about how NOT to get your manuscript published:
- Never cut your manuscript pages into a cute bunny shape because your book is about rabbits.
- Do not fill the manuscript box with plastic Spiders if you have written a Horror story.
- Do not send the editor a chocolate bar as a bribe (especially if you send your manuscript to a publisher in Georgia, USA during summer!).
- Do not include a note to the editor saying, "Would you people dare to publish it? It pleases Satan if you don't!" (this agent keeps the note on his corkboard to laugh at (after rejecting the manuscript).
- Never include photos of yourself naked. Most especially not if you are in a sexually explicit pose. And certainly not if there is another person in the photo. Let's not even discuss inanimate objects!
- Do not turn one page in the middle of the manuscript upside down to see if the editor actually read it (the editor telling this story did read the story, carefully turned the page upside down to the way it was when he got it, and shipped it back with a rejection)
- Do not include an insult in your cover letter, such as "I'll bet you never read this, you moron!"
- Do not claim that you wrote the book because God is speaking through you.
- Never leave out the last page of a chapter or book to see if the editor is paying attention.
- Never write your manuscript in a curly font that nobody can read.
- Do not get the editor's, publisher's, or agent's name wrong! (The owner of Meisha Merlin publishing house named it after his two dogs - he tends to ignore any unsolicited works which begin "Dear Mr. Meisha" or "Dear Mr. Merlin").
