I have not yet tried this myself, but plan to some time in the future. I have read that even the papyrus scrolls you buy on the street in Egypt are more than likely made of these materials instead of true papyrus. The scrolls were of papyrus of which there were at least three grades. They could also read off the posted notices which were on the walls of certain buildings. Pottery shards and very thin pieces of wood have also been found with writing on them. The ancient Romans had wax tablets and scrolls for their main reading materials.
