they are shown on maps as the outlines of the states in part or in full

& on the ground along which they actually run they are also linear

often following rivers or watershed divides or geodetic lines such as meridians or parallels of latitude

& they are also physically marked on the ground in places by durable monuments so their location is not is doubt & is preserved over the course time
