Earthquakes are caused by vaults. (Cracks in the earth.) The 2 broken pieces have a reverse tug-of-war. They push against each other and either make a mountain or a depression. If these 2 pieces push against each other really hard, eventually, the energy releases and causes an earthquake with high magnitude.
