There are about 37 different species that are spoken of, or commonly referred to as Foxes, and many assume they are listed under the Fox classification "Canis Vulpes". But there are really only 12 "true Fox species" listed under the species type of Canis Vulpes, and even the Tame Silver Fox has some questions still being researched. Also the Arctic fox has a species class called "Alopex" despite evidence which proves it could be included in the Canis Vulpes. The current list is as follows:

  1. Bengal Fox
  2. Blanford's Fox
  3. Cape Fox
  4. Corsac Fox
  5. Tibetan Sand Fox
  6. Red Fox
  7. Kit Fox,
  8. Pale Fox
  9. Rüppell's Fox
  10. Swift Fox
  11. Fennec Fox
  12. Tame Silver Fox

Additional Info: The US Fish and Wildlife Services Endangered Species List has seven Fox species listed as "endangered". The following information is current as of Nov, 2009;
  • Northern Swift Fox
  • San Joaquin Kit Fox
  • San Miguel Island Fox
  • Santa Catalina Island Fox
  • Santa Cruz Island Fox
  • Santa Rosa Island Fox
  • Simien Fox
The International Union of Conservation for Nature, also known as the IUCN Red List has 24 different species of Fox listed with an endangered status ranging from "critically endangered to data deficient". Not all of these listed are of the species type "Canis Vulpus", or the "true Fox species". For more details, please see the sites listed below.

If there are different breeds of dogs and these ultimately derive from foxes then why aren't there different breeds of foxes?

AnswerIt is generally surmised that dogs were derived from wolves, not foxes. There aren't different breeds of foxes because a breed is a man-made thing. Breeds are created by human tampering to enhance or diminish certain traits within a group of dogs, cats, horses, etc. There are different types (species?) of fox, such as the arctic fox, bat-eared fox, red fox, etc.
