Sound (and vibration) waves have their two related components, pressure and velocity. And these quantities require a medium for their expression.

[You cannot have pressure or velocity in a vacuum!] Sound and vibration need a medium for their transmission.

Electromagnetic waves have the two related components, their electric field and their magnetic field. These electromagnetic waves may transmit through a vacuum.

transverse matter waves need a particle of matter to exist. they also travel at one speed, the speed of light. A transverse wave is a moving wave that consists of a single swing of movement in one direction ocurring perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer.

Mechanical Waves

- caused by vibration

- needs medium (air) to propagate (move)

Electromagnetic Waves

- Caused my vibrating 'charged' particles

- doesn't need meduim (air) to propagate (move)

(basically in can still move in space )

Hope that answers your question !

Mechanical waves require a medium to travel, where electromagnetic waves do not.

How are mechanical and electromagetic waves different?

Here are some differences between mechanical and electromagnetic waves.Mechanical waves can be either transverse or longitudinal. Electromagnetic waves are only transverse waves.Mechanical waves require a material medium to propagate. Thy can only travel in solids, liquids and gases. Electromagnetic waves do not require any medium. They can travel in vacuum also.Electromagnetic waves travel at the speed of light. Mechanical waves travel at much slower speeds.Mechanical waves propagate by the vibration of molecules of the medium. Electromagnetic waves travel by the oscillations of the electrical and magnetic vectors of a photon.

light waves are electromagnetic

How mechanical and electromagnetic wave are different?

The biggest difference is that mechanical waves require a medium to travel through and electromagnetic waves do not.

mechanical waves carry mechanical energy and electromagnetic waves carry electromagnetic energy.

Are tsunami waves electromagnetic?

No, they are mechanical waves.

What are the similarities and differences between mechanical wave and electromagnetic wave?

Mechanical waves need matter to transfer energy, while electromagnetic waves do not, they can travel through space, or a vaccum. Electromagnetic waves include the electromagnetic spectrum... (This includes visible light, radio waves, gamma rays, x-rays, ultraviolet rays, infra-red waves, and microwaves.) They both are able to travel through a medium of gas, liquid, or solid. Also, electromagnetic waves have the weird quantum property of sometimes acting like waves, and sometimes acting like particles.

What is non mechanical wave?

Non mechanical waves are Eletro magnetic waves. We can devide 2 waves. 1 is mechanical waves & 2 is electromagnetic waves. For example Sound is a mechanical wave & Light is an electromagnetic wave.

How are em waves different from mechanical waves?

mechanical waves need a medium to travel through, electromagnetic waves do not. Electromagnetic waves can travel through space, mechanical waves can not.:PElectromagnetic waves do not require a medium, but mechanical waves do.
