Earthquakes occure in places like the Andes (subudction zones) where one plate is forced under another, or along fault lines like the San Andres, where they force against one another laterally. They can also occure far from any fault lines, such as in Western Australia ,and are thought to be caused by tensions within the plate. This type of earhquake is generally less severe. Earthquakes also also occur in rift zones, where sea floor spreading is taking place , such as the Mid- Atlantic ridge. These are less frequent and less severe than in the subduction zones on the Pacific rim.
