There are four different types of sewing machines. They include mechanical, electronic, computerized, and manual sewing machines. The type you choose depends on the features you want and the sewing project you are working on.
The 3 sewing machines I can think of that are readily available on the retail market are: basic sewing machines, Serger machines, and embroidery machines.
Brands of Household Sewing Machines:

Historical chronology for sewing machine features:
I still have a Montgomery Ward Sewing Machine, a popular and top of the line basic machine sold in the early 1970s.
There are many different types of sewing machines especially under the industrial sector.
However all these sewing machines can be classified under there stitch types which fall under the following categories.
100 series for instance 101 is a single thread chainstitch
200 series for instanc 209 is a lockstitch hand stitch type (strictly not a sewing machine but some machines can replicate this type of stitch.
300 series for instance 301 is a lockstitch
400 series for instance 401 is a double chainstitch
500 series for instance 501 is a single thread over edge stitch
600 series for instance 602 is a two needle covering chain stitch.
within each of these series is multiple sub categorys, for instance ;-
103 is single thread blind stitch.
304 is a lockstitch zig zag
404 is double chain stitch zig zag
503 is a two thread over edge stitch.
605 is a three needle covering chain stitch
all sewing machines are covered within these initial series or categorys and will fall within one of the sub categorys of the initial series.
to list all the sewing machines available is theoretically possible but realistically i dont believe anyone could list all of them, especially as variants are being developed all the time.
In the household machine lines there are straight stitch machines and there are zig-zag machines. On a straight stitch machine the needle can only move in one direction: vertical (up and down). Treadle (foot powered) machines and quilter's machines are usually straight stitch machines. On a zig-zag machine the needle can also move side to side. Fancy zig-zag machines have cams that change the zig-zag width automatically so that it makes nice decorative stitches. Most home machines are zig-zag machines, which make them capable of doing the buttonhole we are accustomed to using. These machines have a manual reverse button or lever to hold to make the feed dogs push the fabric backward. Zig-zag machines also do straight stitches.
There are currently three levels on zig-zag machines: basic electric, electronic, and embroidery. The basic electric is described above. The electronic machine also controls the feed dogs as well as needle position to allow more intricate utility stitches as well as fancy decorative patterns that go beyond the zig-zag such as animals, flowers and the alphabet. The programed patterns on the electronic machines are limited to the width of the needle swing for the zig-zag. An embroidery machine controls the fabric with a hoop and can cover several square inches of fabric. They can stitch beautiful art work and tell you when to change colors of thread. The pattern size is limited by the size of the hoop. These machines use preprogrammed cards and are often connected directly to computers.

"Toyota is not known for its sewing machines but rather for its automobiles. Toyota sewing machines are not in the top ranked sewing machines in consumer reviews. However, on sites such as Sears they have received positive reviews and their reliability does not appear to be an issue."
