I believe you have made a spelling mistake and actually mean fish from the "Cyprinidae" family. There are seven sub groups and over a hundred species included in this classification which includes all the Barbs and Goldfish. As far as there being external/visual differences between the sexes, if any, that depends upon the species. Some have no visible differences and others like some of the Barbs are easily distinguishable by their colour, size, shape and markings.

Probable because they are schooling fish. Schooling fish stay together in groups so that it is harder for predators to get at them I think. Some schooling fish actually have to stay together in groups or else they will get sick, so if you have, or are going to get a tank, make sure you get enough. Or, they might not be schooling fish, and might just be scared!
