A world map, cartogam, aeronautical map, nautical chart, contour map, topographic map, geologic map, cartogram, and pictorial map are nine of the various types of maps available for special purposes.
Because if you try to put all the things that anyone wanted to see on a map, it would be too cluttered to read. It is better to have a special purpose map for a special purpose. Then you can see what it is that you want to see, without getting confused or wasting time and missing important points.
See whether you can find a couple of marvellous books by Edward R. Tufte (Don't be put off by their stuffy titles, just page through them and see what a difference a well-designed special purpose map can make!)
The books' titles are:
"Envisioning Information"
and
"The Visual Display of Quantitative Information."

Political features that are depicted on maps include state and national boundaries and capital cities. A capital is often represented by a star within a circle. 2. Physical Maps - Physical maps depict many kinds of physical features, including mountains, rivers, and lakes. Areas of water are usually colored blue.
