There were more than 100 ethnic groups at the time, but the most advanced civilizations included the Aztecs and Mayans. Other civilizations already extinct at the time of contact with Europeans include the Olmecs and Teotihuacans, which are considered to be the precursors of such advanced societies.
The Mayans, Aztecs, and the Inca settled in different parts of the world. The Aztec in central Mexico, the Mayans in much of Central America and parts of Mexico, and the Inca in South America, particularly in the Andes Mountains of Peru. All of these groups however, originated from Asia. This is because of the migration of their ancestors from Asia when they crossed the Bering Strait. As the groups continued to migrate, each group stayed within that area and started their own culture.
Mexico and Central America belong to several groups. Latin America (which also includes South America and the Caribbean), North America (which also includes the US, Canada, and Caribbean), the America (the continents of North and South America), and sometimes simply Central America, as Mexico may be grouped in the category as well.

Pyramids were primarily built by ancient Egyptian and Mesoamerican civilizations for religious and ceremonial purposes. Other religious groups, such as the Mayans and Aztecs, also built pyramids, but the design and significance of these structures varied between cultures.
People needed to group together to survive, so eventually groups got large enough to start taking over other groups, and eventually started forming small "countries". Civilizations first started showing up after Farming was developed in Ancient Mesopotamia, which allowed cities to form.
