No one knows this with any degree of reliability. It is known that Poe was not treated by his personal physician for any diabetic condition during his lifetime. The idea that Poe had Diabetes arose as one possible theory of his death (among many others). The idea arose simply by a review of his symptoms and condition at the time of his death and not of any symptoms or conditions during his life other than the fact that he did not tolerate alcohol very well.
