Ultimate strength design assumes the entire cross section of a member is subjected to its yield stress and will generally save material, but be less conservative given the same factor of safety.

∙ 10y agoAbout 3 to 5 orders of magnitude. Ultimate strength is the point at which a structure will fail. Working stress is the point at which the designed structure will operate at full stress load. This is usually a factor of safety of 3 to 5 times less than the ultimate strength.
Example: If a load on a beam will be expected to handle a working stress of 50,000 lbs. with potential shock loading of 150,000 lbs. then the ultimate strength of the beam to use should be 750,000 lbs. with a factor of safety designed in of 5 times the maximum shock load. This factor of safety is often enough to prevent failure of the structure resulting from fatigue and corrosion.
