The oldest rocks in the Black Hills are metamorphic, mostly slates and quartzites, and are over 2 billion years old. Intruded into these are granites. Younger rocks include pegmatite and metasedimentary rocks.
The name "Black Hills" is a translation of the Lakota Pahá Sápa. The name comes from the appearance of the hills from a distance. Because they are covered in trees, they appear to be black!
