The cultures of the Cherokee were they ran successful business, such as grain and limber mills. The Cherokees had their own schools, and some could speak and read English. Many had converted to Christianity. The Cherokees even had written an alphabet for their language.

Because Cherokees were forced to learn the ways of the "whites" and they learned how to read, write, and speak english. They also were forced to dress like them! They put makeup on the indians so they were white and not dark colored. The only way they adapted and were not forced into american culture was that the indians made their own constitution and their own capital copyrighting it from the americans.
Generally speaking the Cherokee were decedents of the Mound Builder culture, sometimes called the Mississippian culture. It is not clear, or definable, that they moved from or to the area of the country where they were 'discovered' by European settlers.
