The Buddha laid out the Eightfold Path as what he described as "the Middle Way" to reach enlightenment. This method is less severe than the path that The Buddha followed and avoids the extremes that he tried and failed at to reach enlightenment (sensory pleasure at one extreme and asceticism at the other)

The eightfold path consists of:

1. Right View

2. Right Intention (thought)

3. Right Speech

4. Right Action

5. Right Livelihood

6. Right Effort

7. Right Mindfulness

8. Right Concentration.

It's called the "Noble Eightfold Path". # Right View (Wisdom) [it is both the beginning and the end of the path] # Right Intention (Wisdom) # Right Speech (Ethical Conduct) # Right Action (Ethical Conduct) # Right Livelihood (Ethical Conduct) # Right Effort (Mental Development) # Right Mindfulness (Mental Development) # Right Concentration (Mental Development) Most are then broken down into general guidelines on how to complete each phase of the path.

The Noble Eightfold path is not a step type process, as is the 12 step approach to addition recovery, it is eight activities that need to be worked concurrently to reach enlightenment. the Nobel Eightfold path consists of:

(1) Right View.

(2) Right Intention.

(3) Right Speech.

(4) Right Action.

(5) Right Livelihood.

(6) Right Effort.

(7) Right Mindfulness.

(8) Right Concentration.

You don't concentrate on one then proceed to the next. You work at all eight at the same time.

As I indicated earlier, the goal of this path is enlightenment. Enlightenment, which is a state in which we see all things clearly, just as they are, without judgments and preconceptions, and where suffering ends.
