The Matariki is the Māori name for the Pleiades star cluster. There are two possible explanations of Matariki (mata-riki meaning small eyes or mata-ariki meaning the eyes of God).
The seven stars are called the Big Dipper or the Plow.
"The" nine stars is wrong. Columba - or any constellation for that matter - contains billions upon billions of stars. That includes galaxies outside the Milky Way Galaxy. A constellation is really just an area of the sky. There are of course a few bright stars which we can easily see. I've put in a link which should answer the question, but it only names seven stars. Click on the link below. Then click on "constellations list" and scroll down to the heading "constellations". Finally click on "Columba".
The Ancient Arabs, Greeks, Hindus, Romans - they all helped name the constellations. Different cultures have different names for the constellations.

Matariki is created by a cluster of stars known as Pleiades in the night sky. It is significant in MΔori culture as it marks the start of the MΔori New Year. Matariki appears in the winter months in the Southern Hemisphere, usually rising in late May or early June.
