You say that as if the concept of justice were all that different than it is today. It isn't, seeing as how our concept is based on theirs. The main difference is that they viewed Justice as a personified concept. For the Greeks, Themis was the first embodiment of Justice, later followed by her daughter (by Zeus), Dike. For the Romans, justice was personified in Iustitia. Our concept of 'Lady Justice' or "Blind Justice" is based on many myths, but the image is most closely related to how the Greek viewed Dike: Carrying a sword in one hand and scales in the other, despite most modern depictions being called Themis. Later depictions (from the 15th century onward) usually had her blindfolded as well.
δικαιοσύνη (thee-kay-o-SEE-nee) is the Greek word for justice.

Poetic justice is a literary device where virtue is rewarded and vice is punished in a fitting or appropriate manner. The concept originates from ancient Greek philosophy, particularly Aristotle's idea of tragic justice in Greek dramas.
The Greek goddess of justice was Themis. She was known for her impartiality and wisdom in upholding justice and maintaining order in the world. Themis was often depicted blindfolded and holding a scale to symbolize fair judgment.
