There are 45 breeds recognized by ARBA at this time and others that are in "development" like the Lionhead and the Velvet Lop.

That depends on which breeders association you check with. The number of recognized breeds varies from country to country and even between different associations within a country. Further, there may be several variations according to colour or size within any particular breed. For example, the American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA) Inc. currently recognizes 47 breeds in the United States, with various colours for many of them. Many more breeds exists world-wide, the exact number of which is uncertain.
