They came in third in the first Euro Cup, Euro 1968 in Italy, out of four participating countries, Italy, Yugoslavia, the USSR and themselves. They lost the first match, the semifinal, against Yugoslavia, with 1-0. They played the match for third place against the USSR and won with 2-0. Scorers were Bobby Charlton in the 39th minute, and Geoff Hurst in the 63rd minute.
