Julius Caesar conquered Gaul (which covered France, Belgium Holland south of the river Rhine and Germany west of the Rhine). He reformed the Roman calendar, witching from a lunar to a solar one. This is the calendar which, except minor modifications introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582, is the calendar we still use. He won his civil war against Pompey the Great. He consolidated power in his hands, laying the foundation of the future rule by emperors. Caesar also wrote commentaries of his Gallic Wars, the Commentarii de Bello Gallico.
