- If you have it all backed up on a separate hard drive you can transport all of your material whenever you need to. So if you have to give a presentation all you need is to bring your external drive.

- If you are unfortunate enough to get a virus on your computer it could wipe out all of those memorable pictures and favorite songs and they would be lost forever.

- If you use a flash drive or a smaller memory device you can easily interchange files from work computers to personal computers.

The only real danger in backing up your computer information is that, if you left an external storage drive sitting around somewhere, a person could steal it. But unless you have something extremely important on there, like the financial records of a major company or your social security number or bank information, probably nobody is going to care about what's on it. Other than this unlikely event, backing up your information is much much wiser than avoiding it.
