in general gear drive is useful for power transmission between two shafts which are near to each other ( at most at 1m distance)
also it has maximum efficiency while transmitting power
it is durable compare to to other such as belts, chain drives etc
You can change the power to speed ratio.
advantages:-
- It is used to get various speed in different load conditions.
- It increases fuel efficiency.
- Increases engine efficiency.
- Need less power input when operated manually.
The main purpose of gear drive is a conversion of speed into torque or vice verse.
Applications:
1) Sugar Industries
a) Shredder
b) Mill Crushing
c) Fabriser
2) Cement Industries:
a) Bucket elevator
b) Conveyor Drive
c) Ball mill
d) Vertical roller mill
e) Rotatory Kiln
3) Fertilizer Industries:
a) Agitator
b) Compressor
Etc......

the belt wears and doesnt like the air
its quieter , smother, and more shock resistant
gears need oil to work oil doesnt deal well with air either
The more gears, the wider the range of speeds/loads the gearbox+engine can handle. Bu the more gears, the more parts you need, which make the gearbox heavier, bigger and more expensive.

A number of gears grouped into a single unit is called 'gear train'.If two gear's in mesh eg, a drive gear and a driven gear also constitute a gear train which are called simple gear train and in the simplest form.simple gear train may have more than two gear's.compound, epicyclic, reverted are some other types of gear train's.

Epicyclic gearing or planetary gearing is a gear system consisting of one or more outer gears, or planetgears, revolving about a central, or sun gear. Typically, the planet gears are mounted on a movable arm or carrierwhich itself may rotate relative to the sun gear. Epicyclic gearing systems also incorporate the use of an outer ring gear or annulus, which meshes with the planet gears. Planetary gears (or epicyclic gears) are typically classified as simple and compound planetary gears. Simple planetary gears have one sun, one ring, one carrier, and one planet set. Compound planetary gears involve one or more of the following three types of structures: meshed-planet (there are at least two more planets in mesh with each other in each planet train), stepped-planet (there exists a shaft connection between two planets in each planet train), and multi-stage structures (the system contains two or more planet sets). Compared to simple planetary gears, compound planetary gears have the advantages of larger reduction ratio, higher torque-to-weight ratio, and more flexible configurations.

Because the speed is decreased less from an equal gear ratio.
A simple gear train is basically the same as a compound gear train, but the compound gear train usually has more gears closer together. Hope this was useful, and way better than the previous answer (ha ha!! I'm looking for that too! tell me when you find out!!).
simple move slower
Positive, No chain or belt to break. Negative, Noisy.
A compound gear train connects gears that may share axles or shafts, basically two gears rotating on the same axle, not necessarily at the same speed.
Any power plant that uses more than a single steam turbine as a prime mover. It could be a power plant, or a ship for instance. They use a compound gear train to get everything going the same way at the same time and at the same speed.
Weak compare to helix gear, noisy, cannot handle heavy load Easy to manufacture so cheap, readily available
When gear is explained in connection with gear train, it is an individual member of a gear train. That is a gear train a power transmision system containing two or more gears.
Determine the ratio's of the simple gears in the train and multiply them together for the final ratio. Ex: You have two simple gears in the train one of a 3:1 and the othe is 5:1. 3:1 X 5:1 = 15:1

Gear Train Advantage Arnel Dela Cruz Does gear train provide a force advantage or speed advantage and explain? Make it shortly A gear train can provide a force advantage or a speed advantage, depending on the arrangement of the gears. When the input gear has a smaller radius than the output gear, the gear train provides a force advantage, as the output gear will rotate more slowly but with greater torque. This is known as a gear reduction. Conversely, when the input gear has a larger radius than the output gear, the gear train provides a speed advantage, as the output gear will rotate more quickly but with less torque. This is known as a gear increase or gear multiplier.
