The advantages are:

• In some species, it may be easier and faster than sexual propagation.

• It may be the only way to perpetuate some cultivars.

• It bypasses the juvenile characteristics of certain species.

• The young plant will inherit the good characteristics of the parent plant. (e.g. if the fruits of the adult plant is sweet and juicy, so will the fruits of the young plant be)

However, they fight for water and space. The adult plant also will block the sunlight and prevent the young plant to make food. Also, the young plant may inherit the bad characteristics of the adult plant.
