correlations can help us to understand relationships between things that are not directly related, for example:"Excess exposure to the sun can cause skin cancer" because people who tend to sunburn more also tend to have cancer more. Correlation cannot tell us an exact relationship though. Just because people who burn more tend to have a higher incidence of cancer doesn't necessarily mean that sun exposure is the REASON anyone in particular may have skin cancer
