Google Messenger (actually called Google Talk) has a pretty good install base, but so do many other IM clients. There is a plugin that allows videoconferencing, but, again, so do others. When selecting an IM client, take into consideration what the people you want to chat with use, and go from there. You may find that you want to use a client that is interoperable with multiple IM platforms.
