Most people are not naturally against hunting, they are simply conditioned/trained to misunderstand the sport. If you ask a non hunter, What is hunting?" you really get some interesting answers. They are as varied as the people you ask. The negative answers most often refer to cruelty, disregard for life, danger of accidents, violation of property rights, drooling, and etc.. Most answers would be changed by a little education. Perhaps the anti-hunters forget that their eyes point forward.... just like every other predator. The human being is designed as a hunter by nature. Do you remember the day after Thanksgiving, when stores had their "Welcome to the Christmas Season" sales... at 4:00 AM ? I went with my wife; I think it was a good example of a predator on the hunt. In some form, I think we are all "hunters".

Sorry, I could get on a soap-box about this one... however, I have deviated from your question: "Why are people AGAINST hunting?"... I don't know, and maybe they are not... philosophical issues.

I would like to buy a Winchester Model 70 Mannlicher Style rifle, or anything related such as catalogs, brochures, boxes, magazine articles, and etc.

Some people think killing animals for sport is mean to animals (even though it it not) and that killing animals decreases their population. ( even though without hunting the animal population would be out of control.)

  • Hunting for Population Control is now obsolete because we can instead introduce immunocontraceptions into wildlife populations to decrease their number. This has already been put into effect with feral pigeon populations in cities and wild bison populations on Catalina Island, to great effect. Although contraceptions are expensive, that's what our taxpayers can pay for instead of hunting areas. Either way, the moral choice is clear. It also has less of an effect on wildlife populations than one would believe. Many species adjust the number of offspring they produce depending on the amount of food available at the time. Although killing off select numbers of individuals does increase the available food for the species, that only means that mothers will have more offspring. When there is less food available, pregnant animals will only give birth to one offspring. Hunting also disturbs and frightens animals, driving them out of their territories and onto roads. This, ironically, increases roadside accidents.
  • Hunting For Food is redundant in an age when meat is readily produced and available for purchase. Nobody in a first world country has any right or reason to hunt for sustenance.
  • Revenue from hunting, used to benefit conservation causes, is no greater from that generated from ecotourism - seeing the animals in their natural habitat.
  • Trophy or Traditional Hunting - hunting sheerly for sport or for a cultural tradition - cannot be taken into consideration because it benefits nobody other than the hunter. Not to mention, a person who kills for the thrill of it can potentially be classed as a serial killer.
  • The attitude that hunting promotes in general - the glorification of killing, the notion that the lives of animals are unimportant - is both disturbing and detrimental towards the public opinion of animals. It promotes an anthropocentric approach towards wildlife and the environment in general.

with out hunting, animinals would over populate. From diseases to becoming road kill. Deer and other large game eat crops and cost farmers profits. I know farmers that have lost land and farms from deer crop damage.

Wild house cats and such wild animinals carry diseases, hunting help keep this in check.

Well, one advantage to hunting animals would be a stable population of an animal. If we didn't hunt certain organisms, than that organism could overpopulate and consume all the vegetation, thus leaving no vegetation for other animals...

Additional Information:

Other advantages:

-Jerky can be made from mostly any animal. And jerky is good. However, the animal should be dead before the jerky process begins, which is where the hunting aspect becomes an advantage. Otherwise, the process is much more difficult.

-Entertainment. Squirrels on fences are especially enjoyable for target practice.

As compared to??? Some people prefer to hunt as the meat is more 'natural' than supermarket meat. Some prefer the taste, some prefer the effort, others enjoy the experience. There are just as many reasons to hunt as there are to go to the supermarket. As far as advantages? It depends on your perception.
