Aside from the obvious difference in medium, there are a number of key differences between email spam and postal spam.

First and foremost, postal mail operates by opt-out principles. That is, it is perfectly acceptable to send postal mail to anyone. It is the responsibility of the recipient to contact mailers to opt-out of receiving future mailers (few do). Conversely, it is just the opposite with email marketing.When sending email, it is presumed that recipients do not want the emails, and so the law requires that they specifically opt-in to receive marketing emails. Without this permission, or a pre-existing business relationship, emails cannot be sent.

Functionally, a key difference that greatly distinguishes them is that postal spam costs the spammers who send it. Even with deep bulk mail discounts, postage individual mail pieces range from approximately $0.25 and up for commercial mailers and $0.12 cents and up for non-profit organizations. So, the quantity of postal spam with which consumers must cope is effectively limited by the cost to the mailer. Truly unwanted, harassing, or useless mail will have little response and will not be worth sending. Further, the identity of mailers is verified using bulk mail indicia. Each mail piece can be tracked back to the originator, who can and will be held accountable for statements made, or for content in general.

Conversely, email spam costs nearly nothing, so even with extremely low response rates, it can still be commercially viable. Further, especially where scams or illegal emails are concerned, but even in the case of "legitimate" marketing emails, it is very difficult to determine the originator of an email. Thus, accountability is difficult to maintain; this is why email spam is so difficult to control. It can be sent from anywhere, by anyone, with essentially zero accountability.

Email has the benefit of being nearly instantaneous in transmission, does not require the sender to purchase a postage stamp, and can include rich multimedia communications. On the down side, email cannot transport physical objects, can be spoofed and hacked, and rarely has a mechanism of guaranteeing delivery.
