Plywood is strong relative to it's thickness, it's fairly light and it's cheap. It has good stability (hard to warp ) and it usually works well in wet conditions. (compared to chipboard of 'flakeboard' -It comes in many varieties and can be rough and cheap as a backing or supremely smooth with a melamine or MDO.
