The main area, where the people sit, is called the nave(from the same route as 'naval'- to do with the sea, as, looking up, naves look like upturned boats).

Beyond the nave, you will find the lectern (to read The Bible from), the priest's seat and prayer stall, and pulpit, from which the sermon is preached, all situated in the area called the chancel. Sometimes the chancel is separated from the nave by a screen called a rood screen. If there is a choir that sits regularly in the chancel, this area is sometimes called the choir. Further towards the end again and you come to the communion rails, at which church members kneel to receive the bread and wine during communion. Beyond the rails is the area known as the sanctuary where the communion table (or 'altar') is situated.
Larger churches also have transepts - areas that jutt out of the chancel either side so that the floor area of the church resembles a cross. Also, beyond the sanctuary in some churches (especially Roman Catholic Churches), and behind the sanctuary, is a semicircular part that usually houses a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary. This is known as an apse.

But this is what we called the areas in the church I grew up in.
