Music of the Counter Reformation was characterized by its elaborate embellishments, use of polyphony, and a focus on clarity of text for religious worship. Composers during this period, like Palestrina, sought to convey the sacred texts clearly and with emotional depth, often using a cappella vocal settings. The music was designed to enhance the spiritual experience and convey the teachings of the Catholic Church.
