It started back in the day when Internet first came around. A man named Henry Johnson came up with trying to be nice to people over the Internet because they couldn't see his facial expressions. Then the whole thing exploded into a waterfall of unicorns and rainbows and that's how it came about today.

Netiquet is a set of common-sense rules people should follow while on-line. They are there to guide people as to what is type of behaviour is expected when using sites like forums or chat-rooms.

For example - one of the commonest is typing large blocks of text in BLOCK CAPITALS. Typing in block capitals is the internet equivalent of shouting. It's distracting and completely un-necessary. most forums and chat programs have the ability to emphasise words in bold print. However - it should be used sparingly.

Put simply - don't do anything on the internet that you wouldn't feel comfortable doing in public. That includes such things as swearing at people in chat-rooms, posting angry or stupid responses to questions on forums (like WikiAnswers), or posting suggestive or obscene pictures of yourself or someone else on-line.
