In Holdem each player is dealt two personal cards face down (known as 'hole cards') and five shared community cards are dealt face-up, to form the 'board'.

All players in the game use any combination of these shared community cards and their own hole cards to make their best possible five-card poker hand.

There are four types of Hold'em, with different betting structures:

Limit HoldemThe bet or raise value is a fixed amount on all streets, equal to the Big Blind pre-flop and on the flop and DOUBLE the Big Blind (equal to a Big Bet) on the turn and river.

A maximum of 3 raises are allowed during each betting round (raise, re-raise and cap), putting a betting ceiling of 4 x Big Blind pre-flop and on the flop and 8 x Big Blind (or 4 x Big Bet) on the turn and river.

No Limit HoldemThe minimum bet is the size of the Big Blind on all streets.

A raise must be AT LEAST equal to the previous bet or raise in the same round.

The maximum raise is the size of your stack (chips or money at the table).

There is no 'cap' on the number of raises allowed.

Pot Limit HoldemThe minimum bet is the size of the Big Blind on all streets.

A raise must be AT LEAST equal to the previous bet or raise in the same round.

The maximum raise is the size of the pot, equal to:

The active pot + All bets on the table + The amount the active player must first call before raising.

There is no 'cap' on the number of raises allowed.

Mixed HoldemThe game switches between rounds of Limit Holdem and No Limit Holdem.

The blinds are increased when the game switches from No Limit to Limit, to ensure some consistency in the average pot size in each game. The betting rules on each round follow the rules for that game, as described above.

Buy-inIn Pot Limit and No Limit, the games are referred to by the size of their blinds (for example, a 1/2 NL or PL Holdem game has a small blind of $1 and a big blind of $2).

There is normally a maximum buy-in of 100 x the big blind and the example above could also be referred to as a NL200 or PL200 game with a maximum buy-in of $200.

In Limit, the games are referred to by the size of their bet values (for example, a 3/6 Limit Holdem game has a $3 bet size pre-flop and on the flop and a $6 bet size on the turn and river).

There is no maximum buy-in for Limit Holdem games.

SetupThere are two types of initial forced bets:
  1. Small Blind
  2. Big Blind

The Big Blind is normally twice the Small Blind, but the ratio can vary in Limit games if the Big Blind value is not an even number.

The player sitting to the left of the dealer button posts the small blind and the player to his left posts the big blind.

The DealAll players are dealt two cards face down (hole cards). Pre-flop (Betting Round 1)The action proceeds clockwise around the table, starting with the player to the left of the big blind (in the 'under the gun' position).

The player may match the big blind bet, make a raise or fold.

The betting moves around the table until every player has had a chance to act and has either folded out of the hand or bet the same amount as everyone else still in the hand.

Note - A player must match the previous bet, raise or fold, he cannot pass by checking in the first round of betting.

The Flop (Betting Round 2)If at least 2 players remain three community cards are dealt face-up (The Flop) and are available to all players still in the hand.

The action proceeds clockwise around the table, starting with the first player still in the hand to the left of the button.

The player may either check or bet.

The betting moves around the table until every player has had a chance to act and has either folded out of the hand or bet the same amount as everyone else still in the hand.

Note - A player must match the previous bet, make a raise or fold. If no player has bet, he may check or bet. If nobody bets during the round a turn card is dealt for free.

The Turn (Betting Round 3)If at least 2 players remain the fourth community card is dealt face-up (The Turn or Fourth Street) and is available to all players still in the hand.

The betting process for the Flop is repeated on the Turn.

The River (Betting Round 4)If at least 2 players remain the fifth community card is dealt face-up (The River or Fifth Street) and is available to all players still in the hand.

The betting process for the Turn is repeated on the River.

The ShowdownIf two or more players remain in the hand after all betting is complete, all players display their best 5 card hand in a showdown to determine the winner.

The player with the highest five-card poker hand wins the pot.

If two or more winning hands have the same value, the pot is split equally between them (all suits are equal for the purposes of awarding the pot).

The game of poker, as played in a casino, has many rules. Some basics are staying in turn and keeping the type of cards within their hand to themselves. A player has to keep their cards protected by either holding them or placing an object over their hand. Cards cannot be removed from the table or hidden.

Poker is not a single game with a single set of rules, but a classification of games sharing similar characteristics. These basic characteristics are played as follows: An ante, or initial bet, is thrown into the pot to serve as incentive to play. Cards are dealt and additional bets are made based on the perceived strength of the cards held. Other players may match your bet ('call'), increase the amount ('raise'), or remove themselves from investing further ('fold'). This is repeated until all but one player has folded or all of the cards (for the specific game) have been drawn or shown, at which point the hands are revealed and the strongest hand wins.

There are different poker games and each one has its own rules. For all games, the winning hands are based on card groupings. It is harder to get the best hands. The hands include high card, one and two pair, three and four of a kind, straight, flushes, etc.

The rules of casino poker include protect the cards/hand, act in turn, and knocking the table means 'check'. Similarly, bets should be in front of the player's cards.
