While there are variations, sometimes dramatic variations, between cultures in terms of the stories told about what caused solar eclipses, the most common was that the sun was being devoured and that loud noises, chants, songs and so on would frighten the monster away.

Ancient Chinese civilizations once believed the moon was battling a dragon during a lunar eclipse. The peoples of this time would make as much noise as one possible could through the entire event in order to scare away the dragon, so that it could not devour the moon. This is still a tradition as recent as today, though the beliefs have probably changed.

The peoples of India, still to this day, will hide inside during a eclipsed out of fear that the moon allows bad rays to strike the Earth.

The scientific explanation of a solar eclipse is that it is the shadow falling on the earth when the moon comes directly between the sun and the earth.

There are nearly as many different folk beliefs about solar eclipse as there are non-technological cultures. Many relate to a demon devouring the sun until driven away, or to divine displeasure being made manifest by the removal of the sun.
