One example is Clostridium botulinum. This bacterium produces the infamous "Botox" we all hear about. The botulinum toxin causes flaccid paralysis, thus muscles cannot contract because acetylcholine is not able to be released into the synapse from the pre-synaptic vessicle and bind to the post-synaptic vessicle. Therefore the muscles cannot contract. Botox injections use this incredibly potent toxin in excedingly small amounts injected into the muscles of the face to prevent contraction, thus those wrinkles cannot be seen if you can't use your muscles. The opposite is the tetanospasmin toxin also from Clostridium bacterium (Clostridium tetani) that causes spastic paralysis (often reffered to as lock jaw). This occurs from the inability to prevent or stop muscle contraction by inhibition of inhibitory neurotransmitters such as GABA and glycine.

Discuss the beneficial uses of bacterial toxins in medicine?

In molecular biology the B protein from Cholera toxin is used to identify gangliosides (an important class of biological compounds) visually with a microscope. This enables researchers to perform advanced experiments on many different diseases. Many promising drugs for treatment of brain disorders are rendered ineffective because they can not get past the "blood-brain barrier". Within the last month, researchers reported that they have been able to use a toxin from Rabies to successfully administer a drug of their choice into brain tissue. (Rabies is a virus not a bacteria though...)
