I use flat bottomed shoes without sponge or gel on the bottom at this is not supportive of the foot when under pressure and a flat shoe also give the calf a work out more so when just carrying heavy weights to and from machines. I don't wear shoes usually but when your truly comfortable wouldn't recommend incase you drop the weight but I don't think a shoe will give much protection.
