The best applications for the iPhone are the ones that do what you need or would like them to do.

And of course, there are thousands of games to choose from.
There are user ratings available for every app in the iTunes App Store, as well as lists of the currently popular titles. Review those resources to get a good idea of what are considered by many to be the "best" applications available.
