Seriously, you generally need to use backup software. It will prompt you as to what kind of backup to do, and so on, and prompt you to insert whatever media. There are other solutions such as backup drives with software that looks for changes and automatically copies things to the backup drive.
There is also RAID 1, where you install an additional hard drive to run with your existing one, and whatever gets written to one gets written to the other. That only protects from hard drive failure, and not from viruses, human error, or sabotage.

It has the added advantage of allowing you to access your files from other computers so that if your machine dies and you buy a new one you can just download your data from the network.
