I have a Mercury Cougar and the biggest problem with every one that I have owned are their struts.

3.8 Overheat and blow head gaskets

ANSWER

Early 90's common problems are electrical, normally interior. Otherwise there are generally no mechanical issues unassociated with the owner. If the 3.8 is overheating and blowing head gaskets there is a huge problem with the driver. My Cougar has 300,000 original miles on the engine and transmission.
