That depends completely on your categorization parameters.

Is it loudness? Then you can distinguish between quieter sounds and louder sounds.

Is it sound source? Then it is much more problematic. The first division could be speech-sounds and non-spoken sounds. But it completely depends on your focus. You could also categorize sounds from material, e.g. wooden sounds, glass sounds and so on. There are endless categories here.

Is it the sound as a percieved acoustic entity? Then you could categorize sounds as "sounds with a sharp attack", "pulsing sounds", "high frequent sounds" etc.

Luigi Russolo classified "noise-sounds" (not musical tone sounds) into six groups:

1: Roars, Thunderings, Explosions, Hissing roars, Bangs, Booms

2: Whistling, Hissing, Puffing

3: Whispers, Murmurs, Mumbling, Muttering, Gurgling

4: Screeching, Creaking, Rustling, Buzzing [5], Crackling, Scraping [5]

5: Noises obtained by beating on metals, woods, skins, stones, pottery, etc.

6: Voices of animals and people, Shouts, Screams, Shrieks, Wails, Hoots, Howls, Death rattles, Sobs

That's one example of many.

In foley sound recording the categories are more practical such as:

Feet (foosteps), Moves (sounds from clothes) and Specifics (e.g. a coffee cup)

Phonology helps us understand how sounds are used to create meaning in language.

What are the importance of phonology?

It also plays a crucial role in language comprehension and production, as it governs the rules for organizing sounds in a language. Additionally, phonology helps to explain differences in pronunciation among dialects and languages.

Why do you need to study phonology and speech arts?

It is the study of how speech sounds are made. The International Phonetic Alphabet was designed primarily for studying speech to specify each sound that can be made orally to from words. All speech sounds are divided into categories, vowels which are divided into sub categories: front, central and back vowels depending on where in the mouth the sound is produced), consonants which are divided up into: sonorants, obstruents, fricatives, affricates, sibiliants, stridents, liquids, glides, and dipthongs. Knowing all these categories and their manner and placement of articulation can help further diagnose people with speech disorders.
