Think about the time a kid will spend with their parents versus the time they will spend with all of their teachers combined. Children learn lots of things in the first few years of life. Some of these could stay with them for years, and habits could be hard to get rid of. If a kid has learned that his parents don't care about his grades, then he probably won't either. Or if he sees that he can get away with underhanded stuff, as his parents do all the time, why would he be honest?
