After you swallow the tablet, it has a coating on the outside which only dissolves when reacted by the chemicals in the stomach. When the tablet reaches the stomach the coating break opens and the content within it is released and effect is felt after then then. The making of a tablets was important stage in the medical field.

When you cut a tablet in half, you are increasing the exposed surface area of the tablet, by exposing a section that was formerly on the inside of the tablet. The process of dissolving takes place at the surface, so the more surface there is, the faster the tablet can dissolve.
