Thunderstorms occur about 5 times a year in Los Angeles county

Los Angeles is a city that receives more sunny days than rainy ones, but Los Angeles is not immune to the chance of thunderstorms. The chances of thunderstorms in the Los Angeles area depends on the micro climate you are in. For example, in the mountains and deserts, they have more of a chance of thunder because those areas give lift to the atmosphere. Lift is the energy that thunderstorms need to produce. Here is the micro climates with the chances of thunderstorms.

Beaches: >30%

Basin (Downtown Los Angeles): >20%

Valleys/ Inland Empire : <40%

Mountains: <20%

These are not official, as these are my guesses

Summary: The chances of thunderstorms in Los Angeles depend on where you live, and where the low pressure system is. Should the low pressure system be on top of the city, the chance of thunder storms go up. Thunder storms also occur in the summer, but that is by a term called ' monsoonal moisture' where a high pressure system in the four corner states drive moisture from Mexico. Most of these thunder storm chances go to the mountains and deserts, but sometimes could be drifted to the Los Angeles basin. Overall, Los Angeles does not receive alot of thunderstorms
