A girls period sees changes within her uterus. The layer of blood and the ovum (the egg that did not get impregnated) slough (fall away) off of the uterine wall and the pH (acid level) of the uterus changes. The bloody wall leaves via the cervix and the vagina and comes out in bloody patches and in clumps of bloody material. This is known as the "period". These actions are also accompanied by changes in the muscular wall that cause cramping and hormonal changes in the circulating blood that can cause pain and irritability for the woman undergoing menses. In a few days 2-5 the woman/girl will have finished her period and be in the same state as she was prior to undergoing the period. The hormones released also often cause the woman/girl to become more sexually aroused than she was just before the period.
